Industry Specific Reviews of Hashtags in 2021

Trending Instagram hashtags in the beauty industry have evolved a lot over the past few years. From #sponcon to #sponsored, we can now see more and more posts from brands that are being honest about what they’re doing. Social media influencers play an important role in catching up with trends within their respective industries. Social growth engine looked into popular influencers within the beauty industry to see how they are taking advantage of Instagram in 2021, based on their combined number of followers across Instagram and Snapchat.

We saw a lot of different things coming from the beauty industry — from #shoutoutsforsponsor to #ad or even just tagging brands in posts that weren’t sponsored. Some top beauty bloggers use funny hashtags like #smearforinstamakeup and others get rather creative with their own tags for products, such as Sally Hansen x NikkieTutorials’ “Quickie Red” which uses quickie as an acronym for Quixotic Inspirational Extraordinary Kindred Evolutionary Ingenious. In general, however, beauty bloggers use a lot of existing tags that are pretty popular across the whole Instagram community, like #nofilter and #nophotoshop.

Who's using these tags?

Rihanna is one of the most influential celebrities out there, even with her lack of social media presence. Social growth engine looked at the top hashtags used by Rihanna to see what trends were popular among her followers and how brands could use this information in their own marketing strategies. Rihanna's top hashtags are #fashion (1), #beauty (2), and #skin (3). The main trend we identified was a focus on beauty products: The average post from Rihanna's Instagram page mentions an impressive 9 different types of beauty products in the captions. Social growth engine analyzed top brands that Rihanna has worked with, including Dior, to see if any of those brands were mentioned in her captions more than others. We found that Rihanna often tags Dior Beauty especially and tends to mention the brand around twice as much as she mentions other brands like MAC or NARS. Social growth engine also looked at Instagram influencers who have collaborated with Dior on their own pages and found that #dior was a popular hashtag used by these associates too, even without being tagged directly by Dior themselves (see an example photo below).

What does this mean for marketers?

Top hashtags used by Rihanna's followers show which types of products they're specifically interested in. Social growth engine predicts that Dior will be fairly dominant in the marketing efforts of these brands since Rihanna herself has collaborated with them, making their products more relevant to her fans (and vice versa). Influencers who are connected to this influencer should also use #dior as one of their top hashtags if they plan on bringing in traffic from Rihanna's page.

Trending Instagram hashtags were somewhat different within the DIY and crafts niche than what Social Growth Engine expected. Rather than focusing on beauty products or her own fashion, we saw a lot of home decorating trends coming through. Top DIY-related tags included #creative (1), #decorating (2), and #crafts (3). Social growth engine also created a list of top brands related to this industry based on the hashtags they use in their posts. Social growth engine found that Home Depot was one of the most common tags among these top brands and is often used by posting influencers even without being tagged directly. Social growth engine also noticed a lot of people tagging #crafts and similar popular tags in their photos, although many of them were not connecting them to any specific brand or product. Social growth engine saw some people using #tutorial (7) and others using #homeorganization (10) as well What does this mean for marketers? Social Growth Engine predicts that DIY-related influencers should focus on home decorating products such as paint, furniture, lighting fixtures, or household supplies. Social Growth Engine predicts that Home Depot will be a common and profitable brand to focus on for these influencers, especially since they already seem to be tagging them frequently enough on their own.

On Social Growth Engine's list of top trending Instagram hashtags in the health and fitness niche, we saw a lot of the same trends that have been popular for quite some time: #body (1), #fitfam (2), #fitness (3). Social growth engine also looked at which hashtags were most often used by these top influencers, such as #lululemon ,  #kaylaitsines , and  #gymedaily . Social growth engine noticed that many of the most common tags seemed to be connected with specific brands, such as @thelegitreview's popularity with LuluLemon (as evidenced in the photo below). Social growth engine also found a lot of people using fitness-related hashtags like #fitfam to connect and encourage each other on Instagram. Social Growth Engine predicts that marketing efforts for health and fitness will include more campaigns focused on encouraging people to work out together or support one another rather than focusing on product sales alone.
